What It Is

An essay structure is the way to organize ideas in a written piece. It has four parts: Introduction, Body Paragraphs, and Conclusion. The essay structure helps the writer to express their thoughts clearly and logically.

Key Rules

  • Introduction: Start with a hook (interesting fact or question) to grab the reader's attention.
    • Example: "Did you know that...?" is a hook.
  • Introduction: Introduce the topic and thesis statement (main idea).
    • Example: "This essay will discuss the benefits of recycling."
  • Body Paragraphs: Each paragraph should have a topic sentence (main idea) and supporting details (evidence).
    • Example: "The benefits of recycling include reducing waste, conserving natural resources, and protecting the environment."
  • Body Paragraphs: Use transitions (words or phrases) to connect ideas between paragraphs.
    • Example: "In addition, recycling also..."
  • Conclusion: Summarize the main points and restate the thesis statement.
    • Example: "In conclusion, recycling is essential for our planet's health."
  • Conclusion: End with a call to action (encouragement to take action).
    • Example: "Let's make a change and recycle more."
  • Essay Structure: Use transitions to connect ideas within paragraphs.
    • Example: "Firstly, secondly, and finally..."

Common ESL Errors
