First Aid For Shock

Any serious injury or illness can result in shock, which is a life-threatening condition. Shock can develop quickly or gradually. It is a failure of the heart and blood vessels to provide enough oxygen to every part of the body. Without oxygen, the various body systems - especially the heart, brain, and the kidneys - will begin to slow down and ultimately die.

The degree of shock is determined by a number of factors, including:
- Age (especially high in the very young and very old)
- Victim's general health
- Excessive fatigue
- Rough handling
- Delaying medical attention


Signs & Symptoms:
- Anxiety, restlessness
- Rapid, weak pulse
- Rapid, shallow breathing
- Pale, cold, clammy skin
- Blue/pale lips and nail beds
- Coldness of extremities
- Thirst, dryness in mouth
- Nausea
- Dizziness, fainting
- Mental confusion

Tips:
- Do not elevate victim's head if spine or leg injury is suspected.
- Do not give victim anything to eat or drink.
- Call for medical help.
- Control Bleeding.
- Check and monitor responsiveness and breathing.
- Place in Shock Position.
- Keep victim warm until help arrives.
