Any serious injury or illness can result in shock, which is a life-threatening condition. Shock can develop quickly or gradually. It is a failure of the heart and blood vessels to provide enough oxygen to every part of the body. Without oxygen, the various body systems - especially the heart, brain, and the kidneys - will begin to slow down and ultimately die.
The degree of shock is determined by a number of factors, including: - Age (especially high in the very young and very old) - Victim's general health - Excessive fatigue - Rough handling - Delaying medical attention
Signs & Symptoms: - Anxiety, restlessness - Rapid, weak pulse - Rapid, shallow breathing - Pale, cold, clammy skin - Blue/pale lips and nail beds - Coldness of extremities - Thirst, dryness in mouth - Nausea - Dizziness, fainting - Mental confusion
Tips: - Do not elevate victim's head if spine or leg injury is suspected. - Do not give victim anything to eat or drink. - Call for medical help. - Control Bleeding. - Check and monitor responsiveness and breathing. - Place in Shock Position. - Keep victim warm until help arrives.
