(3) They came in contact with the people there. (4) They traded with them, but they also captures many of the people. (5) These people were sent to the New World where they became slaves. (6) Most of them ended up working on farms and plantations. (7) Some Africans were sent from Gorée, a small island off the coast of what is now Senegal. (8) There are about nine and a half million people in Senegal today. (9) They stayed in dungeons until the ships from the New World came to take them to America and the Caribbean. (10) Some Africans also profited from the slave trade. (11) A group of free African women, called signares, sold food to the European traders for the enslaved people and also owned many slaves herself. (12) Today the dungeons where they stayed are a museum. (13) Hundreds of people visit this museum each year to see where the slaves were held. (14) They view the dungeons and the House of the Slaves, which is where the masters lived. (15) Their is a memorial statue right outside the house showing African slaves in chains.
