The Electoral College system consists of 538 electors. A majority, or 270 electoral votes, is required to elect the president. Each state is allotted one elector for each of its members in the House of Representatives (which is based on the state’s population) plus two additional electors to account for the state’s two senators. The following figure shows the results of the 2016 presidential election. Senators are elected to six-year terms, and members of the House are elected to two-year terms.
