• Box Fill — Conductor Count: Each current-carrying conductor entering the box counts as 1. Pigtails 12 in or less do not count. All ground wires together count as only 1 conductor.
• Box Fill — Device and Clamp Allowances: Each strap-mounted device (switch, receptacle) counts as 2 conductors. Internal cable clamps together count as 1. Each luminaire stud or hickey counts as 1.
• Volume per Conductor: Based on the largest conductor in the box per NEC Table 314.16(B): 14 AWG = 2.0 in³, 12 AWG = 2.25 in³, 10 AWG = 2.5 in³.
• Conduit Fill Percentages: 1 conductor: 53%. 2 conductors: 31%. 3 or more conductors: 40%. Use Chapter 9 Tables for conductor and raceway areas.

Exam Traps

• All equipment grounding conductors in a box count as only ONE conductor total — not one per wire.
• Conductors that pass through a box without splicing count as 1 each.
• Device fill (2 conductors per device) is based on the largest conductor connected to that device — not the largest in the box.
• Conduit fill for 2 conductors is 31%, NOT 40% — many students apply 40% to all situations.
• Nipples 24 inches or less between boxes may be filled to 60% — a commonly tested exception.
