The 2023 National Electrical Code (NEC), or NFPA 70, is the most current U.S. standard for safe electrical design, installation, and inspection, published by the National Fire Protection Association in August 2022. It introduces critical safety updates for residential and commercial, including mandatory surge protection, enhanced GFCI requirements, and reorganized, modern, electrical standards. 

Key aspects of the 2023 NEC include:
Safety Upgrades: Mandatory surge protection devices (SPDs) for dwellings and improved GFCI protection in kitchens, wet bar areas, and for specific appliances.
Solar & Storage: Updated interconnection and rapid shutdown standards for solar PV and energy storage systems.
Structural Changes: The code is being reorganized for better usability, starting in 2023 with new articles for medium voltage (over 1000V AC/1500V DC) and reorganized, limited-energy system content.
Adoption: As of late 2025, the 2023 NEC is rapidly being adopted across U.S. states. 

Structure of the 2023 NEC
The 2023 NEC is organized into nine chapters, with a major restructuring aimed at improving usability by consolidating definitions into Article 100: 

Chapter 1: General (Definitions, requirements for installations)
Chapter 2: Wiring and Protection (Branch circuits, feeders, GFCI/AFCI, surge protection)
Chapter 3: Wiring Methods and Materials (Conductors, conduits, cable assemblies)
Chapter 4: Equipment for General Use (Cords, switches, receptacles, appliances)
Chapter 5: Special Occupancies (Hazardous locations, healthcare, temporary installations)
Chapter 6: Special Equipment (Solar PV, electric vehicle charging, pools)
Chapter 7: Special Conditions (Emergency systems, Class 4 power)
Chapter 8: Communications Systems (Telephone, radio, data)
Chapter 9: Tables (Conductor properties, conduit fill)
Annexes A-K: Informational, providing guidelines and examples 

The 2023 code also added new articles for emerging technologies, including Article 512 for cannabis oil equipment, and enhanced regulations for solar PV systems.
