Quick diagnostics → Fast fixes

[RC-OwnWords] Paraphrase vs copy

  • Check: “Explain this sentence in your own words.”
  • Fix: “Cover–Turn–Tell” (cover text, say idea aloud, write it).

[RC-Evidence] Inference with proof

  • Check: “What can we infer? Underline the sentence that proves it.”
  • Fix: Prompt: Because in the text it says…; require page/line reference.

[MainIdea] Main idea vs details

  • Check: Choose best title; highlight one sentence that sums the paragraph.
  • Fix: “Who/what + what about it?” → main idea; everything else = details.

[Summary] Summarising

  • Check: Summarize a 6–8 sentence passage in 2 sentences.
  • Fix: SWBTS (Somebody–Wanted–But–Then–So) or First–Then–Finally frames.

[Morphology] Prefixes/suffixes/roots

  • Check: Meaning of unhelpful, transport, careless.
  • Fix: Split and gloss: un– (not) + help + –ful; build a personal prefix/suffix bank.

[TextStructure] Informational structure

  • Check: Identify structure: sequence, cause–effect, compare–contrast.
  • Fix: Use signal words; make a quick organizer that matches the structure.

[WriteProcess] Paragraph build

  • Check: Student writes with no topic/close.
  • Fix: T–S–C frame: Topic sentence → Support 2–3 details → Close (wrap/lesson).

[RunOn/Comma] Sentence boundaries

  • Check: Fix: “I went to the park it was fun.”
  • Fix: FANBOYS or period; read aloud for natural pause.

[DialoguePunct] Dialogue rules

  • Check: Punctuate: “stop” said Maya “that’s mine”
  • Fix: “Stop,” said Maya, “that’s mine.” Quotation marks + comma rules.

[SVA-Collective] Subject–verb agreement

  • Check: “The team (is/are) winning.”
  • Fix: Treat collective as one unit (is) unless acting individually (are); proof by replacing with it/they.

[PronounCase] I/me; we/us

  • Check: “Grandma gave gifts to my brother and (I/me).”
  • Fix: Drop the other noun test: “to me” sounds right → choose me.

[IrregularPast] Verb tense

  • Check: bring→brought; go→went; see→saw.
  • Fix: Irregulars list + quick chants; use in 3 example sentences.

[ArticleUsage] a/an

  • Check: Fill in: “__ apple,” “__ uniform.”
  • Fix: Sound-based rule: an + vowel sound (an apple), a + consonant sound (a uniform).
