Note: The GMAT is a computer-adaptive test designed to punish patterns. It is used for Business School (MBA). The biggest mistake students make is treating it like a math or English test, rather than a reasoning test.
A. Data Sufficiency (Quantitative): The "Sufficiency" Mind-Trap
Data Sufficiency is a question type unique to the GMAT. It is designed to test your ability to analyze information, not just calculate.
Mistake 1: Solving the Problem Instead of Checking for Sufficiency
Scenario: The question asks, "What is the value of x?" Statement (1) gives an equation. The student solves for x, gets an answer, and marks Statement (1) as sufficient without checking Statement (2).
Why it's a trap: The GMAT doesn't care if x = 5. It cares if you can find x. However, the real trap is the "C-Trap." Often, Statement (1) alone seems insufficient, and Statement (2) alone seems insufficient, so you combine them (pick C). But sometimes, one of the statements alone is actually sufficient if you manipulate it algebraically.
Fix: Never combine statements until you have proven that both individually are insufficient. Ask yourself: "Can I get a unique value from this statement alone?" If yes, stop. Do not bring the other statement into your brain yet.
Mistake 2: Assuming "Sufficient" Means "True"
Scenario: Statement (1) says x > 5. The question asks, "Is x > 10?" The student sees that Statement (1) doesn't guarantee x > 10 (x could be 6), so they mark it as insufficient.
Fix: "Sufficient" doesn't mean the answer is "Yes." It means the statement gives you enough information to answer the question definitively. If the question is "Is x > 10?" and Statement (1) says x = 4, that is Sufficient (because the answer is definitively NO). A definitive "No" is just as valuable as a definitive "Yes."
B. Critical Reasoning (Verbal): The "Scope" Error
Critical Reasoning passages are short arguments. The GMAT loves to trap you by shifting the scope.
Mistake 3: Picking the "Strengthens the Argument" Answer When the Question Asks for "Weakens"
Scenario: This is the classic speed-reading error. The question asks, "Which of the following, if true, would most weaken the conclusion?" The student finds an answer that sounds good and supports the topic, but it actually supports the argument.
Fix: Before looking at the answer choices, write a "+" or "-" on your scratch pad. If the question asks for "Weaken," you are looking for a "-" (negative) impact on the argument. If it asks for "Strengthen," you are looking for a "+." Filter the answer choices through that lens first.
Mistake 4: The "Necessary vs. Sufficient" Confusion in Assumption Questions
Scenario: The question asks, "Which of the following is an assumption required by the argument?" The student picks an answer that would definitely make the argument true if it were true (a sufficient assumption).
Fix: An assumption is something that must be true for the argument to hold water. Use the Negation Test. Negate the answer choice. If the argument falls apart when you negate it, you have found the correct assumption. If the argument still stands, it's not necessary.
C. Integrated Reasoning (IR): The "Overthinking" Trap
Mistake 5: Reading Every Tab of Data
Scenario: IR prompts often have 2-3 tabs of information (emails, charts, spreadsheets). The student reads Tab 1, then Tab 2, then Tab 3 carefully, forgetting what was in Tab 1 by the time they get to the question.
Fix: Go straight to the question. The question will tell you exactly which tab to look at (e.g., "Based on the email from Johnson and the chart in Tab 2..."). Read the question, then hunt for the data. Don't pre-read.
