What This Is

Editorial: The city’s new subway line has reduced traffic congestion. Therefore, the city should expand the subway system to further decrease congestion.

Assumption? The subway’s success in reducing congestion isn’t due to a one-time anomaly (e.g., a major highway closure) and can be replicated elsewhere.

Step 1: Identify the Conclusion and Evidence
- Underline the conclusion (look for keywords: therefore, thus, so, should, must).
- Bracket the evidence. Ignore background info.

Step 2: Find the Logical Gap
- Ask: What’s missing between the evidence and conclusion? - Predict the assumption in your own words.

Step 3: Apply the Negation Test (If Stuck)
- Negate each answer choice. The one that destroys the conclusion is correct.

Step 4: Eliminate Trap Answers
- Out of scope: Irrelevant to the gap.
- Too strong: Uses extreme language ("all," "never," "only").
- Reverse logic: Supports the opposite of the conclusion.
- Premise booster: Restates evidence (not an assumption).

Step 5: Confirm the Correct Answer
- It must be necessary (the argument fails without it) and minimal (no extra fluff).

- Does this destroy the conclusion? No—they could consider it but still prioritize other factors.

Step 4: Eliminate Traps
- A: Too broad. The argument only cares about financial success, not "other factors." - B: Irrelevant. The argument is about the award’s criteria, not "Starlight’s" profitability.
- C: Restates evidence (already given in the prompt).
- E: Too strong. The judges not considering profitability is extreme—they could consider it but not prioritize it.

Step 5: Confirm Correct Answer
- D is necessary. If financial success were the primary criterion, the least profitable film wouldn’t win. The argument depends on this.
