Weaken questions ask you to undermine the author’s conclusion by introducing new evidence that makes the argument less likely to be true. The GMAT tests this skill because business leaders must identify flaws in reasoning—whether in reports, pitches, or strategic plans. A single Weaken question can separate a 650 from a 700+ score.
Real-GMAT Example:Editorial: The government claims that the country’s nuclear power plants are entirely safe and hence that the public’s fear of nuclear accidents is groundless. The government also contends that its new inspection regulations, which require that each plant be inspected at least once annually, will ensure continued safety. Yet, the government’s own studies show that the primary cause of nuclear accidents is human error, not mechanical failure. Thus, the government’s claim that the new inspections will ensure safety is mistaken.

When to use it: After identifying the core. The correct weakener will attack this assumption directly.
Predict the Weakener
When to use it: Before looking at answer choices. This prevents you from falling for "close but not quite" options.
Eliminate Strengtheners & Irrelevancies
When to use it: After predicting. Cross these off immediately.
Watch for "Shell Game" Answers
When to use it: When stuck between 2 choices. Ask: "Does this directly undermine the assumption?"
Use the "Negation Test" (Advanced)
Step 1: Read the Question Stem First- Look for: "Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens…?" - Action: Underline "weakens" to confirm the task.
Step 2: Break Down the Argument- Conclusion: The author’s main claim (often signaled by thus, therefore, hence, so).- Premise(s): The evidence supporting the conclusion.- Assumption: The missing link. Ask: "Why does the premise not guarantee the conclusion?"
Step 3: Predict the Weakener- Action: Write a 1-sentence prediction. Example: "The inspections don’t address the real cause of accidents."
Step 4: Evaluate Answer Choices- Action: Compare each option to your prediction. Eliminate: - Strengtheners (support the conclusion). - Irrelevancies (no effect on the argument). - Shell games (mention the topic but don’t attack the assumption).
Step 5: Confirm the Best Weakener- Action: The correct answer will directly attack the assumption and make the conclusion less likely to be true.
