The GRE tests verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing. Unlike the GMAT's business focus, the GRE is designed for a wider range of graduate programs. The traps here often involve misreading quantitative comparisons, falling for vocabulary tricks, and mismanaging the adaptive section format.


Trap 1: The "Quantitative Comparison" D-Trap

  • The Objective: Determine the relationship between two quantities (Quantity A and Quantity B).
  • The Trap: You do a quick calculation, see that Quantity A seems larger, and select A. But you forgot to consider special cases—zero, negative numbers, fractions, or undefined values.
  • Why It Works: Quantitative Comparison questions are designed to test your ability to think beyond the obvious. Students often pick the first relationship they see without testing edge cases .
  • The Fix: Always test at least two different numbers before deciding. For variables, try:
    • Positive integer (2)
    • Positive fraction (0.5)
    • Zero (if allowed)
    • Negative integer (-2)
    • Negative fraction (-0.5)
    • A very large number (100)
      If the relationship changes across these tests, the answer is D (cannot be determined).
  • Example:
    • Question:
      • Quantity A: ( x^2 )
      • Quantity B: ( x )
    • Trap: Pick A because ( 3^2 = 9 > 3 ).
    • Correct: Test ( x = 0.5 ): ( 0.25 < 0.5 ) → B is larger. Test ( x = 1 ): ( 1 = 1 ) → C. Test ( x = -2 ): ( 4 > -2 ) → A. Since relationship changes, answer is D (cannot be determined).

Trap 2: The "Vocabulary Decoy" Trap (Verbal - Text Completion)

  • The Objective: Choose the correct word to fill in the blank based on context clues.
  • The Trap: You see a word in the answer choices that you recognize and think "I know this word!" without fully understanding the sentence's logic. You pick that familiar word, even if it doesn't fit the context .
  • Why It Works: GRE verbal heavily tests vocabulary, but it also tests contextual reasoning. Students latch onto familiar words (especially those they just memorized) and ignore the sentence's meaning .
  • The Fix: Always read the sentence first and predict a word for the blank using context clues. Then match your prediction to the choices. Don't let the answer choices drive your thinking.
  • Example:
    • Sentence: "Despite his outwardly ______ demeanor, he was known among friends for his sharp wit and lively conversation."
    • Trap Choices: A) gregarious B) taciturn C) loquacious D) jovial E) morose
    • Trap: Seeing "gregarious" (a common vocab word) and picking it without noticing "despite" and "outwardly."
    • Correct: "Despite" indicates contrast. The second part says he has sharp wit and lively conversation. So outwardly, he must be the opposite—quiet or reserved. Prediction: "quiet" or "reserved." Best match: B) taciturn.

Trap 3: The "Percent" Base Confusion (Quantitative)

  • The Objective: Calculate percentage increase, decrease, or comparison.
  • The Trap: You apply the percentage to the wrong base. For example, in successive percentage changes, you assume they cancel out when they don't .
  • Why It Works: Percentages are counterintuitive. Students treat them as additive when they are multiplicative .
  • The Fix: Remember: percentage change is always relative to the current value, not the original. Use the formula: ( \text{New} = \text{Old} \times (1 \pm \frac{p}{100}) ). For successive changes, multiply the factors.
  • Example:
    • Question: "A price increases by 20% and then decreases by 20%. What is the net percentage change?"
    • Trap: 0% (cancels out).
    • Correct: Let original = 100. After increase: ( 100 \times 1.2 = 120 ). After 20% decrease: ( 120 \times 0.8 = 96 ). Net change = ( 96 - 100 = -4% ) (4% decrease).

Trap 4: The "Recycled Answer" Trap (Verbal - Sentence Equivalence)

  • The Objective: Choose two words that both complete the sentence with similar meaning.
  • The Trap: You find one word that fits perfectly, then pick another word that looks similar but doesn't have the same meaning. Or you pick two synonyms that fit the sentence but ignore that they need to be both correct and produce a sentence with the same meaning .
  • Why It Works: Sentence Equivalence questions require two answers. Students sometimes get attached to the first correct word and choose any other word that seems plausible, without checking whether it creates a sentence with the same overall meaning .
  • The Fix: Find the first word that fits. Then, actively look for its synonym in the context of the sentence. The two correct answers must be interchangeable without changing the sentence's meaning .
  • Example:
    • Sentence: "The professor's lecture was so ______ that even the most attentive students struggled to stay awake."
    • Trap Choices: A) engaging B) tedious C) fascinating D) interminable E) soporific F) stimulating
    • Trap: Finding "tedious" (B) works. Then picking "interminable" (D) because it's also negative. But "interminable" means "endless," which is a different idea.
    • Correct: B) tedious and E) soporific (sleep-inducing) both convey boredom and cause drowsiness.

Trap 5: The "Logic Jump" Trap (Verbal - Reading Comprehension)

  • The Objective: Answer an inference question based on the passage.
  • The Trap: You pick an answer that is true in general or common sense, but it is not directly supported by the passage .
  • Why It Works: Our brains fill gaps with prior knowledge. The GRE tests whether you can stick strictly to what the passage says .
  • The Fix: For inference questions, ask: "Is this statement guaranteed by something in the passage?" If you have to make any assumption, even a small one, it's not a valid inference .
  • Example:
    • Passage: "Many scientists believe that climate change will lead to more frequent extreme weather events."
    • Question: "Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?"
    • Trap Answer: "Climate change is the primary cause of extreme weather." (Too strong, not stated.)
    • Correct Answer: "Some scientists hold a belief about the relationship between climate change and weather events." (Directly supported.)

Trap 6: The "Data Interpretation" Scale Trap (Quantitative)

  • The Objective: Answer questions based on graphs, charts, or tables.
  • The Trap: You read the numbers directly from the graph without checking the scale—thousands vs millions, percent vs actual value, or the units on axes .
  • Why It Works: Under time pressure, you look at the shape of the data and grab the number that seems relevant. The scale is a small detail that's easy to miss .
  • The Fix: Before doing any calculation, spend 10 seconds studying the graph: title, axes labels, units, and legend. Circle the scale if it's unusual (e.g., "in thousands") .
  • Example:
    • Graph: Shows company revenue from 2015-2020, labeled "Revenue (in millions of dollars)." Bar for 2020 reaches 50.
    • Question: "What was the revenue in 2020?"
    • Trap: 50.
    • Correct: 50 million = $50,000,000.

Trap 7: The "Section-Adaptive" Timing Trap (General Strategy)

  • The Objective: Manage time effectively across the entire test.
  • The Trap: You don't realize that the GRE is section-adaptive. Your performance on the first Verbal section determines the difficulty of the second Verbal section. You rush through the first section, do poorly, and get stuck with an easier second section that limits your score ceiling .
  • Why It Works: Students often pace themselves evenly, not realizing the first section carries extra weight. They may also panic if the second section feels harder, not understanding that's a good sign .

Trap 8: The "Research Section" Trap

  • The Objective: Complete the test without unnecessary fatigue.
  • The Trap: You assume every section counts and give full effort to the unscored research section at the end, exhausting yourself before the real scored sections .
  • Why It Works: ETS includes an unidentified research section to test new questions. Students, not knowing which section is unscored, treat all sections equally .
  • The Fix: After the Analytical Writing and two Verbal/Quant sections, you might get a third Verbal or Quant section. This could be the research section. If you're already tired, you can safely reduce effort here, but don't skip it entirely—you don't know for sure which is unscored . Maintain steady effort but don't burn out .
  • Example:
    • Test Structure: AWA → Verbal → Quant → Verbal → Quant → (maybe) Verbal. If you see a third Verbal, it might be research. Pace yourself to have energy for all sections, but don't panic if you're tired in the last one.

Trap 9: The "First Thought" Trap (Analytical Writing)

  • The Objective: Write a well-structured, thoughtful essay within 30 minutes.
  • The Trap: You start writing immediately, using your first idea. The essay is disorganized, shallow, and runs out of steam halfway through .
  • Why It Works: The clock is ticking. Students panic and want to get words on the screen. They forget that 5 minutes of planning saves 15 minutes of rewriting .
  • The Fix: Spend the first 5 minutes planning . For the Issue task: brainstorm 2-3 supporting points and 1 counterpoint. For the Argument task: identify 3-4 logical flaws. Outline your essay structure. Then write .
  • Example:
    • Issue Topic: "Governments should prioritize funding for space exploration over other research areas."
    • Planned Outline:
      • Intro: State position (disagree).
      • Point 1: Immediate human needs (health, poverty) deserve priority.
      • Point 2: Space exploration has long-term benefits but uncertain timelines.
      • Counterpoint: Some argue space tech drives innovation.
      • Rebuttal: Innovation can come from other research too.
      • Conclusion: Balance is needed, but basic needs first.
    • Result: Clear, logical, well-structured essay.

Trap 10: The "Calculator Dependency" Trap (Quantitative)

  • The Objective: Perform calculations accurately and efficiently.
  • The Trap: You reach for the on-screen calculator for every calculation, even simple ones, wasting time and breaking your flow .
  • Why It Works: The calculator is there, so students use it. But it's clunky and slow compared to mental math .
  • The Fix: Use mental math and estimation for simple calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication tables, common fractions). Reserve the calculator for complex arithmetic (e.g., 1,743 × 29) or when you need exact decimals .
  • Example:
    • Question: "What is 15% of 240?"
    • Trap: Open calculator, type 240 × 0.15 = 36. (Takes 15 seconds).
    • Fix: Mental math: 10% = 24, 5% = 12, total 36. (Takes 3 seconds).

Trap 11: The "Geometry Diagram" Trap (Quantitative)

  • The Objective: Solve a geometry problem based on a given figure.
  • The Trap: You assume the diagram is drawn to scale and visually estimate lengths or angles. You forget that GRE diagrams are not necessarily to scale unless explicitly stated .
  • Why It Works: Our brains process visual information quickly. It's tempting to trust what you see .
  • The Fix: Use the given numbers and geometric principles only. Ignore the visual appearance. If a line looks straight, it is; if an angle looks 90°, it's only 90° if marked or stated .
  • Example:
    • Diagram: A triangle with one angle marked 50°, another looks like a right angle (90°) but is not marked.
    • Trap: Assume the unmarked angle is 90° and solve.
    • Correct: Only use the marked 50°. The sum of angles in a triangle is 180°, so the third angle is 130° minus the unknown angle? Wait, you can't solve without more info. The point: don't assume.

Trap 12: The "Score Prediction" Anxiety Trap

  • The Objective: Stay calm and focused during the test.
  • The Trap: During the test, you try to calculate your score based on how you feel about each section. This distracts you from the current question and increases anxiety .
  • Why It Works: The GRE is high-stakes. Students naturally want to know "how am I doing?" But the adaptive format makes real-time prediction impossible .
  • The Fix: Practice compartmentalization . During the test, focus only on the question in front of you. Treat each question as a separate puzzle. Don't think about past sections or future sections. After the test, you can evaluate .
  • Example:
    • During the test: "That last section felt hard. I must have done poorly." (Distraction).
    • Reframe: "That section is over. I can't change it. Next question." (Focus).
