Maria and her family came to the United States mainland from Puerto Rico last year. Maria speaks only Spanish and seems unable to learn English despite extended help from an ESL teacher. Maria is failing all subjects. The school psychologist administered an intelligence test in Spanish. Maria is performing in a mentally deficient range for her age level. Based on these findings, the IEP team is recommending that Maria receive special education services as a student with an intellectual disability. Upon completion of the program, students will be eligible to apply for a Florida teaching certificate in Exceptional Student Education (ESE) with an Endorsement in Teaching English as a Second language (TESOL) and Reading.

Individuals certified in ESE and who have teaching certification in either elementary, middle grades, or secondary education, are eligible to teach in classrooms for students with learning disabilities, mental retardation, emotional/behavioral disorders, and physical impairments, as well as in general education classes.
