The Indian Army is operationally and geographically divided into seven commands, with the basic field formation being a division. Below the division level are permanent regiments that are responsible for their own recruiting and training. So far, 30 people have worked as chief of the Indian Army. From 1947 to 1955 four people who worked as Indian Army Chief were called Commander-in-Chief. Since 1955, the Commander-in-Chief has been called chief of the Indian Army.
