GS Paper I (General Studies) — Exam Playbook

Window & Pattern (confirm before prep): Two objective papers, 200 marks each, 2 hours each; GS Paper-II (CSAT) is qualifying at 33%; negative marking (1/3); typical count ≈ 100 Q in GS-I

Must-do syllabus (80/20)

  • Current events (India & world, last 12–18 months).
  • History: Ancient–Medieval basics, modern & National Movement (think cause→effect timelines).
  • Geography: India & world—physio (rivers, monsoon, soils), economic & human.
  • Polity & Governance: Constitution, Parliament/SC/EC/CAG, federalism, PRIs, RTI, policies/Acts.
  • Economy: Budget/Survey ideas, growth/inflation, banking/monetary–fiscal, inclusion, poverty, infra.
  • Environment & Ecology: climate treaties/COPs, PA/WLs, EIA, basics of biodiversity & pollution.
  • General Science: everyday physics/chem/bio, space/defence/biotech updates. UPSC+1

Top traps (and how to eliminate)

  • Absolute qualifiers (“only/all/always/never”): high risk unless you know exceptions.
  • Mixing scope: national vs state competence; rank vs score in indices.
  • Data units/bases: year, ₹ vs $, ppm vs ppb—kill options with wrong units.
  • Two-true-one-false sets: verify the easiest two first; if both true, suspect the outlier.
  • NOT/INCORRECT stems: pencil-box them; re-read before marking.

Time split (2 h)

  • Pass-1 (70–75 min): Harvest 55–60 sure/short Qs (facts/maps/definitions/clean logic).
  • Pass-2 (35–40 min): Medium reasoning & 50–50s.
  • Buffer (5 min): Re-audit NOT/EXCEPT, units, and guesses.

Last-48h checklist

  • One-page scheme/index table (publisher/ministry/year + India rank/score trend).
  • Maps: 2 runs (rivers, biospheres, parks, new UNESCO/GI, straits/passes).
  • 2 mini-mocks (50 Q each) with negative-mark discipline; update error tags: [Date] [Units] [Scope] [Qualifier] [Map].
  • Budget/Eco Survey themes; 20 enviro one-liners (treaties, authorities).

Quick frames

  • VERIFY news: Version/date • Entity/source • Unit/base • Fact vs opinion.
  • TAUSL for any chart: Title • Axes • Units • Scale • Legend.
  • Constitution Qs: locate Article/Body/Purpose—you can answer many without exact article numbers.

Exam-day mini-plan

  • Warm-up (3 min): 10 one-liners from notes.
  • Mark & move: if a Q crosses 90 sec, park it.
  • Keep a “danger list” on the question paper: NOT/EXCEPT, unit-heavy, multi-statement—review in buffer.
