Firstly, FBRs significantly improve fuel utilisation by converting fertile uranium-238 into fissile plutonium-239, thereby multiplying the energy extracted from natural uranium by a factor of 60-70. This reduces dependence on uranium imports and enhances energy security. Secondly, FBRs contribute to waste management by recycling spent fuel, minimising radioactive waste and its environmental impact. Thirdly, the programme aligns with India’s three-stage nuclear roadmap, bridging the gap between uranium-based reactors and thorium-based systems. The Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam, operational since 2024, marks a critical milestone in this endeavour, demonstrating India’s technological prowess and commitment to a sustainable nuclear future.
Looking ahead, the FBR programme will play a pivotal role in India’s energy mix, ensuring a stable, low-carbon power supply while advancing the nation’s scientific and industrial capabilities.
