India’s geographical location endows it with abundant solar energy potential, receiving approximately 5,000 trillion kWh of solar radiation annually, with most regions experiencing 250–300 sunny days per year. However, the development of solar energy in India exhibits significant regional variations due to a confluence of geographical, infrastructural, economic, and policy-related factors.
The northwestern states, particularly Rajasthan and Gujarat, lead in solar energy development owing to their high solar insolation, vast arid lands, and proactive state policies. Rajasthan, with its Thar Desert, has emerged as a solar hub, hosting some of the world’s largest solar parks, such as the Bhadla Solar Park. Gujarat’s Charanka Solar Park and supportive regulatory frameworks have similarly accelerated solar adoption. In contrast, northeastern states like Assam and Meghalaya face challenges due to high rainfall, cloud cover, and difficult terrain, which limit solar irradiance and increase installation costs. Similarly, hilly states such as Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand encounter land scarcity and environmental concerns, hindering large-scale solar projects.
Southern states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh have made substantial progress, leveraging their relatively high solar potential and robust grid infrastructure. Karnataka’s Pavagada Solar Park exemplifies this success. However, states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, despite their high energy demand, lag due to land acquisition issues, financial constraints, and weaker policy implementation.
To harness India’s solar potential uniformly, a multi-pronged approach is essential. This includes tailored state-specific policies, investment in grid infrastructure, decentralized solar solutions for remote regions, and incentives for rooftop solar adoption. Additionally, technological advancements such as floating solar farms and solar-wind hybrids can mitigate land constraints. With the National Solar Mission targeting 100 GW of solar capacity by 2022 (revised to 280 GW by 2030), addressing regional disparities will be crucial for achieving energy security, sustainability, and inclusive growth.
