Water stress occurs when the demand for water exceeds the available supply during a certain period or when poor water quality restricts its use. In India, water stress manifests differently across regions due to a combination of natural, socio-economic, and governance factors.
Geographically, India’s water availability is uneven. The Himalayan region, fed by perennial rivers like the Ganga and Brahmaputra, experiences relatively lower stress compared to the arid zones of Rajasthan and Gujarat, where rainfall is scanty and groundwater depletion is acute. Urbanization and industrialization in cities like Chennai and Bengaluru have strained local water resources, while poor water management and pollution further reduce usable supply. Climate change intensifies these challenges by altering precipitation patterns and increasing the frequency of droughts.
Addressing regional water stress requires tailored solutions: rainwater harvesting in arid regions, watershed management in peninsular India, and sustainable groundwater practices in agricultural belts. Strengthening inter-state cooperation and investing in water infrastructure are critical for equitable distribution and long-term water security.
