The theory of continental drift, proposed by Alfred Wegener in 1912, posits that the Earth's continents were once part of a single supercontinent called Pangaea, which gradually fragmented and drifted to their present positions over millions of years. This theory revolutionized the understanding of Earth's geological history and laid the foundation for the modern theory of plate tectonics.
Wegener's theory is supported by several prominent evidences. Firstly, the jigsaw fit of continents, particularly the matching coastlines of South America and Africa, suggests they were once connected. Secondly, fossil evidence reveals identical plant and animal fossils, such as the Glossopteris flora and Mesosaurus reptile, on continents now separated by vast oceans, indicating a shared past. Thirdly, rock formations and mountain ranges of similar age and composition are found on different continents, such as the Appalachian Mountains in North America and the Caledonian Mountains in Europe. Additionally, paleoclimatic evidence, like glacial deposits in tropical regions and coal deposits in Antarctica, supports the idea that continents have moved from their original positions. Lastly, paleomagnetic data shows that the magnetic orientation of rocks varies across continents, aligning only when continents are reconstructed into Pangaea.
While initially met with skepticism, the theory of continental drift gained widespread acceptance with the discovery of seafloor spreading and plate tectonics, providing a mechanism for the movement of continents. This theory remains pivotal in explaining Earth's dynamic geological processes and the distribution of its landmasses.
