The rice-wheat cropping system has been a cornerstone of India’s agricultural success, particularly in the Indo-Gangetic Plains, due to several key factors. Secondly, the Green Revolution of the 1960s introduced high-yielding varieties (HYVs) of rice and wheat, along with subsidized fertilizers and pesticides, which significantly boosted productivity. Government policies, including minimum support prices (MSPs) and procurement systems, further incentivized farmers to adopt this system, ensuring food security and stabilizing rural incomes. Additionally, the system’s compatibility with mechanization, such as combine harvesters, enhanced efficiency and reduced labor costs, making it economically viable for large-scale adoption.
However, this success has come at a steep environmental and socio-economic cost, transforming the rice-wheat system into a bane. The excessive groundwater extraction for irrigation has led to a severe water crisis, with states like Punjab and Haryana facing alarming declines in water tables. The overuse of chemical fertilizers and pesticides has degraded soil health, reducing its fertility and increasing salinity. Monoculture practices have also disrupted biodiversity, making crops more vulnerable to pests and diseases. Furthermore, the system’s heavy reliance on subsidies has created economic distortions, burdening the exchequer and discouraging crop diversification. Stubborn adherence to this system has also marginalized traditional crops like millets and pulses, exacerbating nutritional deficiencies and farmer distress. Thus, while the rice-wheat system ensured food security, its unsustainable practices now threaten India’s agricultural future, necessitating urgent reforms toward diversification and sustainable farming.
